Kohtla Underground Mining Experience

Tour description

A full day adventure starts right in the morning. Your English-speaking guide picks you up and takes you to an appealing journey through Eastern-Estonia.

On the way to the mining museum we will have small stops to wander around in the beautiful nature.

The Kohtla Mine museum exposition tells about the work of a miner: working tools, lamps, the equipment and regimentals of the miner, samples of shale. Of course, you will have an helmet with lamp, professional equipment of the miner to go down into the 8-metre deep mine where more than 1,6 km of mine passages are opened for visitors.

Being under the ground, you will see layers of combustible shale between layers of limestone. After each kilometre the layer of slate goes 3 metres lower under the ground. The layer of shale in the area of the mine "Estonia" is already on the depth of 65-70 metres. Inside the mine it is possible to walk, take a ride on a miner’s train, or on a sectional car-bicycle. You will see the storeroom of explosives, shale combinations, unit of loading and clearing of trolleys and you can also try to work with the jackhammer that weighs 23 kg.

We treat you with a simple miner’s lunch and climb up to the daylight to begin our journey back to Tallinn filled with great memories.
